How to Make an off the Shoulder T-shirt

This article looks at how to customize your own T-shirt by turning a regulat T-shirt into an off the shoulder design.

A basic T-shirt can be customized in many ways. If you are feeling creative why not pick up a basic T-shirt at a second hand store, or in a bargain bin and turn it into something special. T-shirt customization is also an ideal way to give your current wardrobe a new lease on life, by making over an old T-shirt.

Off the shoulder T-shirts have been very popular recently with the 1980s fashion revival. They are easy to create from a Basic T-shirt. This article looks at what you require to create one, instructions on how to create one, and a few tips on how to wear your new creation.

What you require:

Scissors-a sharp pair of sewing scissors is best.

A Tape measure-for measuring your work as you go.

A basic crewneck T-shirt with a ribbed neckline-An oversized style is perfect, because this look is often best worn a little slouchy. A tunic length style is great if you’d like to wear your off the shoulder T-shirt with leggings.

This is the perfect do it yourself project for non-sewers because it doesn’t require the use of a sewing machine, or even a needle and thread for that matter.

What you need to do is to cut a new neckline in your T-shirt that is wide enough to let it fall off one shoulder. Start by cutting off around an inch of fabric from the neck by following the same curve as the original neckline. It is a good idea to use a tape measure as you go around to ensure that you are cutting an even amount off the neckline.

Repeat this process, taking off around an inch each time. After doing so each time, try on the T-shirt and see whether it slips off one shoulder. Once it slides of one shoulder satisfactorily stop cutting.

If you want to make it look well and truly deconstructed you can also cut off the end of the sleeves and bottom hem to create an unfinished hem look that ties in with the neckline. T-shirt fabric doesn’t tend to fray so you can simply leave it like this.

How to wear your off the shoulder T-shirt

Long off the shoulder T-shirts look great paired with leggings, jeggings or skinny leg pants. This look also looks good with a belt at the waist. For a casual summer look try partnering your off the shoulder T-shirt with a pair of denim shorts. For exercising or dancing you could wear the shirt with yoga pants or exercise shorts. For a slightly dressier look try popping the shirt with a pencil skirt.
